Design
On the reverse, the symbols explain how to use the Golden Record. At the top left, the disc and the stylus indicate the direction of playback and the duration of one rotation. In the center left, the profile of the disc shows the overall duration of the recording. At the top right, waves and diagrams explain how to transform signals into images, while the circle serves to verify their proportions. At the bottom, the pulsar map reveals the position of the Solar System. The two connected circles finally represent the hydrogen atom, chosen as the universal unit of time and measure. Sound. Images. Coordinates. A message designed to be understood beyond Earth. The obverse reveals the origin of that message. In the center, the Coat of Arms of the Cook Islands emerges next to Earth, suspended above the golden surface of the disc. All around, the grooves reproduce the tracks of the recording. The inscriptions: “THE SOUNDS OF EARTH” – the title of the message, “COOK ISLANDS” – the issuing country, “5 DOLLARS” – the nominal value, and “2026” – the year of issue. At the bottom, the inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” – the country indicated on the disc, “PLANET EARTH” – the planet of origin, and “Side 1” – the side of the recording.
